Nelson Huang

Nelson Huang is a fashion photographer based in Toronto. His Shirley Cards series is based on Kodak’s 1950s Shirley cards, which were used to calibrate skin tones. These colour correction cards are problematic due to their branding of Caucasian women as the “normal” skin tone. This series pays homage to Nelson’s Asian culture through an explorative and contextual investigation that uses Asian women as his subjects. The resulting series addresses topics of diversity representation and exploitation of stereotypical roles in Western media.
